Worldwide sales of nonwoven roll goods continued their mid-single digit growth in
2004, reaching nearly US$15 bn. Sales of the leading ten companies, which ranged
from US$60 mn to US$1.4 bn, accounted collectively for about US$7.9 bn, or 53% of
the total. Nine of the world's top ten managed to increase their sales in US
dollars. The exception was Freudenberg where sales were more or less static.
Nonetheless, Freudenberg remained the number one player, helped by double digit
sales growth in Latin America and a focus on MicronAir automotive interior filters.
Sales at DuPont Nonwovens held up thanks to a focus on brands, technology and added
value-especially in Eastern and Central Europe, Latin America and Asia. Investments
in South Korea should also pay off. Kimberly-Clark will benefit from an improvement
plan and a focus on high growth emerging markets in BRICIT (Brazil, Russia, India,
China, Indonesia and Turkey) countries. BBA Fiberweb's sales hit US$1 bn for the
first time in 2004 although the parent company is looking for a buyer for the
business.
